The pillar guide

What are SEO, GEO and AEO?

SEO is the practice of making a website easier for search engines and AI answer engines to find, understand, trust and recommend. Here's the whole discipline in plain English, with each discipline explained clearly and practically.

What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of improving a website so it appears in unpaid search results when people look for what you offer.

The difference between organic and paid is simple: ads stop the moment you stop paying; organic rankings keep working while you sleep. That's also why SEO is slower — you're building an asset, not renting attention.

Any business with a website has a stake in this. If people search for your product, your service or the problem you solve, somebody is showing up in those results. It may as well be you.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO is the practice of optimizing a website's infrastructure so search engines can crawl, render and index it without friction.

  • Crawlability and indexation — robots rules, sitemaps, canonicals, redirects
  • Site speed and Core Web Vitals — LCP, CLS and INP
  • Structured data so machines understand what a page actually is
  • Mobile-friendliness, because most of your traffic is a thumb on a phone

Technical SEO establishes the foundation that allows content, authority and user experience improvements to perform effectively.

On-Page SEO

On-page SEO is optimizing the content and HTML of an individual page — titles, headings, copy, internal links and images — so it matches what searchers actually want.

The essentials: a unique title tag and meta description, one clear H1 with logical H2/H3 structure, keyword targeting tied to search intent rather than word count, descriptive image alt text, and internal links with anchor text that says where it goes.

Effective on-page content should read naturally while providing a clear structure for both users and search engines.

Off-Page SEO

Off-page SEO is everything done outside your website to build its authority and reputation — mainly backlinks, brand mentions and digital PR.

Links continue to function as authority signals, but their relevance and quality matter. Sustainable results come from useful resources, credible mentions and earned citations.

It matters more than ever for AI search, too — models weigh how often and how credibly a brand is referenced across the web.

Local SEO

Local SEO is the practice of making a business visible in map results and location-based searches — driven largely by Google Business Profile, citations and reviews.

The four levers: a fully completed and actively posted Google Business Profile, consistent NAP (name, address, phone) everywhere you're listed, quality citations, and a real review habit.

For a clinic, a store or a studio, this outranks almost everything else you could spend the month on.

GEO — Generative Engine Optimization

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring content so generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini surface and cite your brand in their answers.

How it differs from classic SEO: there's no blue-link ranking to win. There's a synthesized answer, and a short list of sources it leaned on. Being "cited" looks like your brand named in the answer text, or your URL in the reference list.

What moves it: clean extractable statements, factual consistency across the web, structured data, clear entity signals, and content that answers the actual question in the first two sentences. Vague, padded copy is invisible to a model that's summarizing.

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is structuring content as direct answers to real questions so it can win featured snippets, Google AI Overviews and voice search results.

The mechanics are refreshingly concrete: ask the question the way a human types it, answer it in 40–60 words immediately below, then elaborate. Mark it up with FAQPage schema so machines can lift it cleanly.

GEO and AEO overlap by design — AEO is largely how you earn GEO citations. Do both and the same page serves a search result, a snippet and an AI answer.

Why does your business need SEO?

SEO builds durable visibility: improvements made today can continue attracting qualified traffic well beyond the initial investment period.

Three business reasons stand out: it can reduce acquisition costs over time compared with paid channels; ranking and citations build trust before a conversation begins; and increasingly it decides whether an AI assistant recommends you at all when someone asks it for options.

SEO usually requires months rather than days to produce sustained results. A credible strategy sets realistic expectations and measures progress against agreed objectives.

How I can help

I offer technical SEO audits, on-page and off-page SEO, local SEO and Google Business Profile work, GEO/AEO optimization, content strategy, GA4/GSC/GTM setup — and, unusually, the development work to implement all of it.

Most engagements start the same way: I look at what you have, tell you the three highest-priority opportunities, and we decide together whether that requires a one-off fix or ongoing work.

Still deciding? The freelance SEO FAQ answers the practical questions — timelines, tools, time zones, working with someone in India.
